Celebrating 72 Years of Excellence: Oyemekun Grammar School Marks Milestone with Reflections on Legacy and Future Growth
In a stirring celebration of its 72nd Founder’s Day, Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, recently held a grand ceremony to honour its rich legacy of academic excellence, discipline, and community impact.
The event, which took place at the school’s hall on January 30, 2025, featured a thought-provoking lecture and reflections from prominent figures, all focused on retaining the values that have made the institution an educational beacon in Ondo State.
The highlight of the event was a lecture by Prof. Ganiyu Oboh from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), who eloquently examined the enduring legacies of the school, urging students to cultivate the mindset of giants. “Great achievements require conscious effort and the will to succeed,” Oboh emphasized.
He urged students to make informed decisions, strive for excellence, and embrace the ever-evolving trends in technology as they chart their paths forward.
The Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Afe Olowookere, reflected on the timeless values that have defined the institution, particularly its commitment to academic excellence, discipline, and self-reliance. He noted that these values earned Oyemekun Grammar School the proud moniker, “The Only School.” Olowookere also praised the ongoing contributions of both the staff and the school’s Alumni Association in maintaining these ideals and challenged the students to seize the opportunity before them for personal and academic growth.
Co-chairperson of the event, Chief Dr. Mrs. Kosemani Kolawole, commended the remarkable achievements of the school over the years, noting that the 72nd Anniversary would serve as a guiding light for future generations of students.
The Principal of Oyemekun Grammar School, Mr. Adeniyi Oluyide, an alumnus of the Class of 1983, delivered a heartfelt welcome address. He spoke of the school’s journey from humble beginnings to its current status as a thriving institution. Oluyide emphasized that the school’s commitment to academic excellence and community service remained unwavering. He also acknowledged the pivotal support of the Ondo State Government under the leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa in enhancing the school’s infrastructure and educational standards.
“I cannot overstate the significant role played by the Oyemekun Alumni Association under the visionary leadership of Dr. Adeniyi Ijogun,” Oluyide said. “Their selfless contributions have propelled this school to greater heights, making Oyemekun Grammar School Akure a pilot institution in the entire state.”
In addition to the distinguished speakers, the event also featured expressions of gratitude towards key individuals, including Chief Dr. Mrs. Kosemani Kolawole for her instrumental role in the success of the 72nd Anniversary celebration, as well as the dedicated Vice Principals and teachers of the school.
As Oyemekun Grammar School looks ahead, Rev. Ayoola Ikulanberu, the global PRO of Old Students’ Association, Elder Ojo Isaac and Ojo Mibiola said the message from this year’s anniversary resonates strongly: the enduring legacies of discipline, excellence, and service must continue to guide and inspire the generations of students who will carry the torch of the institution into the future.
