Mrs. Olokunlade, Principal of Akure Secondary Commercial School Highlights Plans for Growth, Calls for Support Ahead of 60th Anniversary Celebrations
Mrs. Cecila Olokunlade, the Principal of Akure Secondary Commercial School, shared key insights on the school’s plans and developments as the 2024/2025 second term academic session begins.
In an exclusive interview with The Democrat News Magazine on Tuesday, January 14th, 2025, Mrs. Olokunlade discussed a range of topics, from the school’s academic goals to upcoming events and the support required to further enhance the institution.
With the commencement of the second term of the academic session, Mrs. Olokunlade emphasized that the school has set in motion a series of initiatives aimed at fostering holistic development in students.
“We are committed to ensuring the total development of our learners across three key domains – Cognitive, Psychomotor, and Affective,” she stated, noting that these goals were initially set in the first term and continue to guide the institution’s efforts.
The principal also acknowledged the support of the government in the area of salary administration, stating that the timely payment of wages and other emoluments has positively impacted the morale and performance of the teaching staff.
“The teachers are fully prepared to work, and the government’s efforts in ensuring the payment of minimum wage and salaries on time are highly appreciated,” Mrs. Olokunlade remarked.
As part of the school’s extracurricular focus, Mrs. Olokunlade revealed that students from the school will be representing Ondo State in Calabar for upcoming sporting events.
She expressed confidence in the abilities of the students, adding that they are also expected to excel in their external exams this year.
The principal also had a message for the students: “I urge all students to remain dedicated, resilient, and focused on their primary goal of academic success. It is important to be obedient to both teachers and parents, as this will foster a conducive learning environment.”
In light of the school’s 60th anniversary, Mrs. Olokunlade extended her gratitude to the school’s alumni for their ongoing support. “The alumni have played a significant role in helping to refurbish the school, giving it a well-deserved facelift.
Their contributions have also included covering medical expenses for students and scholarship to indigent students which have run into hundreds of thousands of Naira,” she said.
Despite the progress made, Mrs. Olokunlade highlighted some pressing needs of the school. “We are in urgent need of a perimeter fence,” she said, pointing out that the lack of this security feature has led to frequent vandalism and theft by outsiders. “The absence of a secure boundary makes the school vulnerable to intruders, and we need this to be addressed as a priority.”
As Akure Secondary Commercial School approaches its 60th anniversary, Mrs. Olokunlade’s leadership continues to steer the institution towards growth, with a focus on academic excellence, student welfare, and infrastructural development.
