Dr. Sylvester Olumuyiwa Adu Honoured with Iconic Humanitarian Award, Conferred with the Title of ‘Atunluse’ of Iju
It was a momentous occasion for Dr. Sylvester Olumuyiwa Adu, a Chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) as he was celebrated with two prestigious honours.
Recognized for his exemplary philanthropic contributions, Dr. Adu received the esteemed Icon of Philanthropy award, and was also conferred with the traditional title of Atunluse of Iju—a testament to his dedication to the progress and welfare of Iju community.
The awards were presented on November 2, 2024, as part of the annual Iju Day celebrations. The honours were bestowed by Dr. Isaac Akin Oluwalade, the National President of Iju Progressive Union, alongside Oba Amos Farukanmi, the revered Okiti of Iju.
In his address, Dr. Oluwalade expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Adu’s selfless service to the community, noting that the award was a small gesture to recognize his significant impact.
“Those who love their community will go above and beyond to see it thrive,” he remarked. “All our honourees today have contributed immensely to our development. This is our way of saying ‘thank you.’ I encourage our brothers and sisters to follow Dr. Adu’s example and continue uplifting our beloved community.”
Oba Amos Farukanmi, Okiti of Iju, also expressed admiration for Dr. Adu’s exceptional character and commitment, using the opportunity to confer upon him the title Atunluse of Iju.
He prayed for Dr. Adu’s continued success, both in his professional endeavours and his aspirations for public service.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Adu expressed heartfelt gratitude to the leaders of Iju and the Progressive Union for the honour, saying that his contributions to the community stem from a place of deep love, rather than political ambition.
“This recognition is a joyful response to what I have been doing for our community. It fills me with gratitude to God, and inspires me to do even more.”
Dr. Adu also took a moment to appeal to the people of Ondo State to support Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa in the upcoming November 16 governorship election, praising him as a leader with a divine mandate to guide Ondo State toward a prosperous future.
Profile of Dr. Sylvester Olumuyiwa Adu
Dr. Sylvester Olumuyiwa Adu hails from the distinguished Adu family, rooted in Akure, Ondo State. He is the son of the late Adu Williams, former Sao of Akure land, and grew up in a home steeped in community values.
He began his early education at CAC Primary School, Oke-Isegun, before completing it at St. Michael Catholic Primary School in Akure. For his secondary education, he attended Anglican Grammar School Ijare (AGSI) in Ifedore Local Government Area, Ondo State.
Despite receiving multiple university offers, Dr. Adu initially chose a path in the military, enrolling at the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he graduated with distinction. His drive for new challenges led him to transition into the Oil & Gas sector in 1995. He worked as a security consultant with a consortium known as TSKJ, comprised of Technip of France, Snamprogetti of Italy, Kellogg of the US, and JGC of Japan—the team responsible for constructing the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Plant in Bonny Island, Rivers State.
After the completion of the LNG project, Dr. Adu diversified his career, joining two accounting firms before ultimately returning to his passion for legal practice. A graduate of the University of Ibadan, he further honed his leadership skills at the Lagos Business School and obtained a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) degree. An accredited Management Trainer with the Centre for Management Development, Dr. Adu served as Managing Attorney for Legal Point Limited before rejoining Nigeria LNG Limited as a Gas Transmission System Advisor. Today, he has risen to the esteemed role of Lead Advisor within the organization.
A member of various professional bodies spanning law, accounting, security, and management, Dr. Adu’s expertise is globally recognized. His academic pursuits and career have taken him to numerous countries worldwide, and he has been celebrated with over 40 academic accolades and eight professional awards. He is a devoted husband and father, with a family that shares his values of service and achievements.
