Oyemekun Grammar School Akure Celebrates Cultural Diversity at 2025 World Mother Tongue Day
On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Oyemekun Grammar School Akure buzzed with excitement and cultural richness as it hosted the 2025 edition of the annual World Mother Tongue Day. Under the dynamic leadership of Principal Akogun Adeniyi Oluyide, the event was a spectacular celebration of cultural heritage, drawing in distinguished personalities to grace the occasion and add glamour to the school.
Speaking with journalists, Akogun Oluyide emphasized the significance of the event, describing it as a crucial initiative in preserving and promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage for future generations. “Today is dedicated to safeguarding our cultural identity, as UNESCO has set this day aside to pass on our languages and traditions to the generations to come,” he remarked.
The Principal also referenced a biblical perspective to reinforce the importance of language, stating, “God used language to create the world, and this is what distinguishes us from animals. It is imperative that we embrace our dialects, as they serve as the foundation for learning and education.”
Oluyide further stressed the critical role parents play in the preservation of the mother tongue, urging them not to downplay its importance for the sake of posterity. “If children understand their dialects, they are likely to excel in their education as they will have a deeper understanding of the world around them,” he added.
