Breaking News: Alhassan Yahya Elected as New NUJ President

Comrade Alhassan Yahya of the Gombe State Radio Corporation has emerged as the new National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). His election took place during the NUJ National Delegates Conference held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the Sam Mbakwe Hall, Rockview Hotels, Owerri, Imo State.

The highly anticipated event, which saw over 600 delegates from across the country participating, marked a significant moment in the union’s history. Yahya secured a resounding victory with 436 votes, defeating his closest rivals, Dele Atunbi of NTA Abuja, who polled 97 votes, and Garba Ahmed, who received 39 votes.

The new president succeeds Chris Isiguzo, who successfully completed two terms spanning six years as NUJ President.

Other executives elected during the conference include Oyetunde Abimbola, who was unopposed and elected as Vice President, among others.

The conference was presided over by a representative of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, with the Imo State NLC Chairman, Mike Okegwu, leading the session.

Comrade Alhassan Yahya’s victory marks the beginning of a new chapter for the NUJ as he pledges to advance the union’s interests and address key challenges in the journalism profession.
