DG NOA, Lanre Isa-Onilu, Sensitizes Nigerians on Lassa Fever Outbreak

In a proactive move to address the growing concerns surrounding the outbreak of Lassa Fever, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Isa-Onilu, has called on Nigerians to join hands in combating the deadly disease.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the agency in Akure, Ondo State, Mallam Isa-Onilu, represented by the State Director of NOA, Mr. James Adekunle, highlighted the need for collective efforts in preventing the spread of the disease.

Addressing the media, Mallam Isa-Onilu stated, “The purpose of this conference is to create awareness and foster synergy to combat the recurring menace of Lassa Fever in our country. This disease has claimed lives across several states, and it is our responsibility to ensure that Nigerians are equipped with the necessary information to protect themselves.”

He emphasized the importance of adopting preventive measures such as maintaining proper hygiene, washing hands regularly with soap and water, and storing food properly to prevent contamination by rodents. He also advised the public to avoid contact with infected individuals and promptly report any suspected cases to health authorities.

In a bid to curb the spread of the disease, NOA has outlined a series of measures to disseminate information widely. These include:Extending outreach efforts to all corners of the country. utilizing traditional and digital media platforms to educate the public and engaging community and traditional leaders to amplify the message at the grassroots level.

Mallam Isa-Onilu announced plans for roadshows in Owo, school outreach programs, and community sensitization drives aimed at educating rural communities, where the disease remains most prevalent.

At the conference, he highlighted the alarming statistics associated with Lassa Fever. In 2023, Nigeria recorded over 1,000 cases with approximately 200 fatalities. As of 2024, over 174 deaths have been reported, with the most affected states including Taraba, Ebonyi, Edo, and Ondo. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) continues to monitor and respond to these outbreaks.

A Unified Front Against Lassa Fever
In his concluding remarks, the DG called on all Nigerians to take personal responsibility in combating the disease, particularly by addressing the proliferation of the multi-mammate rats responsible for its transmission. He noted that while the disease can also spread through human-to-human contact, prevention remains the most effective weapon.

The NOA reaffirmed its commitment to working with health agencies, community leaders, and the media to ensure that no effort is spared in eradicating Lassa Fever and safeguarding public health.

With these measures in place, the agency is hopeful that Nigeria can significantly reduce the impact of Lassa Fever and prevent further loss of lives.
