The Vice Chairman of Ondo State Pig Farmers’ Association, Pastor Ojo Olusanya Titus has called on Nigeria youths to be more active in piggery farming instead of endless waiting for white collar job.
Pastor Ojo who is also the Chairman of Adofure cluster of the association said that Piggery has become a very lucrative business that should be given due attention by government and relevant stakeholders.
While speaking with journalists at the International Culture and Event Centre (The DOME) during the Ondo State International Agric Show and Food Fair 2021, from 23rd to 26th of November saying that the biggest cluster in Ondo State is situated at Adofure where he comes from and that many people are taking the advantage of the business.
According to him: “Piggery has become a big business, as a matter of fact, people did not aware that there is profit in piggery until recently when they are coming into business because it is profit oriented.
“We thank God, in Ondo State we have our ultra modern pig farm at Ilutoro, along Igbatoro road in Akure, built by Mr. Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, you need to get there and see what I am talking about.
“Many categories of people are in the business: people who are still in active service and the retirees, because it is a business to do without much stress and it can yield maximally.
In the same way, Pastor Ojo said the business is not all that capital intensive saying that it all depends on how the potential farmer wants to go about it and his level of capital.
“With little money you can start up the business. It is just like the way people build houses, some build one flat, other ten flats and some others own estates based on their capacities.
“Let me use this medium to charge our youths in Ondo State and Nigeria to come into piggery farming business. It is futuristic, while they are still schooling they can run it side by side.
“Pig is very prolific, we can have about 5 or 10 piglets at the same time and a winner is sold for N5000 to N10,000 and if you have many of them you should know that you are in money already. The only thing is that, they need someone who will help them watch over it when they are busy”.
Also in his comment, the chairman Taskforce Adofure Cluster, Elder Mathew Olowookere said the business has advanced over the years because of elites that came into the business and injected their wealth of experience into it.
In the same way, he called on government to empower members of the association to enable them galvanize economic development of Ondo State.
